Despite having their hearts broken just as they set off, the two of them arrived at their intended shrine. It was about a fifteen-minute walk from the Hashima residence, and every year when he was young, his familyâhim, Keisuke, and Itsukiâs motherâwould come there to pay their respects on New Yearâs Day. It wasnât a very large shrine, but there was a line forming on the approach to it, and Itsuki and Chihiro joined it at the end.
After about twenty minutes, it was their turn to pray at the altar. They stood next to each other, bowing and praying, and each of them threw a five-yen coin into the money box for good luck. Ring the bell, bow twice, clap twiceâthe usual routine.
As he prayed, Itsuki wished for Chihiro to pass the exam for her first choice of school, for Natsume to have a safe childbirth, and for his family to remain healthy. He didnât wish anything for himself, nor did he swear to do anything next year.
After one final bow, he waited for Chihiro to finish up before leaving the shrine with her.
âWhat did you wish for, Itsuki?â
âWell, for you to get into the school of your choice, for Mom to have a safe delivery, and for the family to stay healthy.â
Chihiro gave him a shy smile. âOh⦠Thank you.â
âHow about you, Chihiro?â
âPretty much the same as youâ¦but I also wished for aâ¦â She blushed. âA successful love life. Oh, wait, letâs draw our fortunes over there!â
Aching to change the subject, Chihiro turned her attention elsewhere. But Itsuki just smiled uncomfortably.
âI donât really want my fortuneâ¦â
âNo? Why not?â
ââ¦I had a really good fortune at my last New Yearâs shrine visit, but then the All About anime news leaked out that night, so I swore Iâd never trust my fortune again. I think the paper said Iâd have the best luck in love, tooâ¦â
Chihiro looked at the embittered Itsuki a bit awkwardly. âUm⦠In that case, letâs go buy a lucky charm. For Mom and Dad, too.â
âAll right.â
With Itsukiâs agreement, the pair headed for the shrine office. âIâll pay for them, so buy whatever you want.â
âReally? Thanks.â Chihiro began making her choices.
âFirst off, we need one for your education.â
âRight. Then a safe birth and then one for the family and one to ward off sickness, maybe?â
âYou donât want one for love?â
ââ¦If you donât mind,â Chihiro said, shyly choosing a love charm. âWhat about you, Itsuki? You want any? For prosperity in business or successâ¦in matchmakingâ¦â
ââ¦Traffic safety would be nice.â
âOhâ¦â
Chihiro gave a concerned look to Itsuki, who smiled and picked an amulet at random, as if trying to swallow his pain.
